Dr. Tony Martin---RIP

It has recently come to my attention that Dr. Tony Martin, renowned scholar and historian, has passed away.  He entered into the ancestral realm this past Thursday, January 17th, in his home country of Trinidad.   He was 70 years old, and is survived by his brother Henry Martin, and his son Shabaka Martin.

Dr. Tony Martin was the foremost authority on the Hon. Marcus Mosiah Garvey, and his organization the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA & ACL).  He has written numerous books and articles about the ancestor and his grand organization, and was also a professor at Wesleyan College in Massachusetts, and at the University of the West Indies: Trinidad.

I have been fortunate enough to read a number of Dr Martin's books on Mr Garvey, and have them among my personal collection.  Being an active member of the organization myself, it is required reading to have read "Race First", "African Fundamentalism", and several other titles penned by our beloved scholar warrior, and master teacher.  I feel saddened to have never gotten the chance to speak to, or meet our dear brother, being that we are both members of the same organization.

Our dear brother has now become an ancestor.  I personally will always treasure his work, and will do what I can to help promote and expose his work to the uninitiated masses who have yet to experience this wonderful brother's work.  He is an inspiration to me as a writer, and a consummate advocate for my people.

Rest in peace with our fellow ancestors, dear dear brother.

February Events--Liberated Muse & AACBF

The African American Children's Book Fair will be held on February 9, 2013 in Philadelphia, PA.  The event is being brought to you by the African American Literature Book Club. For more information, please go to their website at www.aalbc.com.

Representing for my peoples at Liberated Muse!  Celebrating 5 (FIVE) years of serving the community through artistic expression and productions, they will be holding a community event on Friday, February 8, 2013.  Representing for the arts scene in DC, (Actually the whole DMV area), Liberated Muse has been a great community that I am proud to be a part of.

Clemente In Context/Clemente En contexto

Clemente In Context is a panel discussion and book lecture that will be held at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of African American Culture.  This event will be held on December 10, 2011, from 12pm to 4:30pm.  The Lewis Museum is located at 830 East Pratt Street in Baltimore, Maryland.

Clemente In Context profiles the life of Major League Baseball great Roberto Clemente; both his athletic prowess on the field, and his humanitarianism off of it. This event will also highlight the struggles that he faced, as well as other African Americans and Afro Latinos in general, the struggles and trial and tribulations with bigotry & segregation in his time, as well as contemporary struggles.  The panel discussion will include sports journalist Danny Torres, actor Modesto Lacen (who currently stars in a play on Broadway about Clemente's life), and author/activist Kevin Alberto Sabio.

Following the panel discussion will be a book lecture based on the book "Raise Your Brown Black Fist: The Political Shouts of an Angry Afro Latino", authored by Kevin Alberto Sabio.  He will be speaking on the struggles of Afro Latino identity, and the issues Afro Latinos face in gaining recognition and acceptance from the mainstream society, and also the Black and greater Latino communities.

The event is FREE, with standard museum admission ($8, $6 for students). Books by participating authors will be available for sale at the event.

Clemente In Context is part of a broader exhibit at the Reginald F Lewis Museum; Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente, and Indivisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas.  Both exhibits will be showing at the Lewis Museum until December 30th.
