I apologize for that. That falls on me. Well...it falls on me, and Blogger was acting weird, and wasn't allowing me to log on a number of years ago on some dumb shit. But, getting to the matter at hand...

As of February 26, 2021, I have official shut down the Universal Africana Literary Arts Movement. Now...what does that mean, exactly? Simply put...I/we will no longer be sending out the Schedule of Events (SoE) lists via email anymore. I will not be doing any other promotional, or informational e-blasts, either. The only arm of the Movement that will remain functional, is our Facebook Fan Page, where I will occasionally post some promotional information. Other that that, no other activity will be taking place in the name of the Movement.

Now...what made me come to this decision? Simply put...the COVID-19 shutdown put a hurting on all of us, and as the founder/organizer of the Movement, it put an additional strain on me, as the Movement is operated by one person...ME! Many of the events that I'd listed in the SoE were shut down, and there wasn't much that I could do informationally to help the other members. Also, I had to concentrate on how to maintain my own literary career at the same time. It was impossible for me to serve 2 masters, and I had to make a serious choice. I chose to maintain my own writing career; that was more important for me. I love representing for our brothers & sisters in this literary field & industry, but I have to maintain my own house, first. Everything that I did was for the good of our people; both the creators/creatives, and the consumers in the community, alike. At the same time, it was very solitary for me, as I'd received absolutely NO assistance in maintaining the Movement. I never had the financial resources, the manpower to do the research and other projects, nor the technical expertise to do other things online that would've helped the Movement to grow.

I am not bitter about this. I was able to maintain this Movement...BY MYSELF, I might add...for 13 years. It was a good and long run, and I am proud of what I was able to accomplish. Some people stuck around until the end, others have fallen to the wayside. Some were true to this mission and their craft & careers, others were nothing more than egomaniacs, and buckelisters. The impact that I've had on people and our community is incalculable. I have no regrets at all. If I would've gotten the support that I needed and wanted, who knows how much more of an impact I could've had? I never wanted to be commercialized by what I was doing. I never cared for mainstream accolades. I was strictly grassroots with everything that I did. Others cared for mainstream acceptance, or were in it strictly for the financial gain of it...I wasn't. I was an activist, first and formost.

So, from when we came on the scene in our first incarnation as the Black CapaCity Literary Arts Festival/Movement, to our current incarnation as the Universal Africana Literary Arts Movement, it was an excellent 13 years of celebrating the Black literary voice. To all of you that have followed and supported us...thank you.

Your humble servant,

Kevin Sabio

"Knowledge As Supreme"

Founder/organizer

Universal Africana Literary Arts Movement & Expohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14509626895335862819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2882899580058166072.post-27782527908247514162016-07-01T09:38:00.000-07:002016-07-01T09:38:53.455-07:00Pre-Harlem Book Fair Meet-N-Greet 2016

Tales From the Rhythmic-Zone
Onli Studios
Story, Pencils, & Ink by: Turtel Onli
Color by: Ashley Woods
Cover Art by: Christian St. Pierre

Tales From the Rhythmic-Zone is a graphic novel combining four stories created through Onli Studios: "NOG NU", "NOG is Back", "The Legend of the Azaniac", and "Wolfshead". The majority of the book is based on the character of NOG, a staple character in the Black Age of Comics Movement started and created by Turtel Onli in Chicago back in 1980s (1981 to be exact).

The main character is known as NOG: The Protector of the Pyramids, protecting the inhabitants of Planet Nubia; a spiritually and technologically advanced race of people from deep in the reaches of outer space. NOG is the result of the union between a Virgin Nubian woman, and "a comet set forth by the sun on the perfect day of peace", he has the power to change form at the speed of thought. To quote Tales From the Rhythmic-Zone:

"Becoming NOG is a process where the most gifted of all Nuba gives over his or her life to protect the Nubian Pyramides, and the planet Nuba."

NOG fights against the Technocratic Complex, and in this graphic novel specifically, against the character of Mag-Non. The Nubian spaceway has been attacked recently by the Technocratic Complex, plundering their outposts, having been destroyed and defaced. Upon this time of reckoning, they have found a new NOG; one that is adaptable for combat on sky, sea, and sand...and especially on dry land.

Mag-Non has arrived on Planet Nubia, using stealth and deceit, attacking the Nubian forces. Nog finally appears, traveling at the speed of thought, and engages Mag-Non in vicious combat.

I truly enjoyed this book, and the creativity behind it. I liked Mr. Onli's use of Kemetic/African spirituality, and cultural history, blending the two in a science fiction narrative form. The colors used were engaging, as well as the attempts at social commentary, without being heavy handed, and on the preachy side. Though preachiness can be very debatable, at least in my humble opinion, the messages in the story weren't over the top. They were quite creative, using some of the character's spiritual decisions and morphing them into a contemporary context.

We are not taught much about our history, or our cultural heritage; Mr. Onli's use of the graphic novel format helped to teach a bit of our history to those of us that are unaware. Graphic novels (and comic books overall, for that matter) are an under utilized tool as a way of reaching our community as an educational tool. They could and should be used as a way to open our children's minds to their history and culture that they might not be receiving at home, and are definitely not being taught in the mainstream school system.

I truly enjoyed this product, and would recommend it for anyone; child or adult. If you are interested in buying this product, and any other Black Age products (There are actually many), you can actually reach Bro. Turtel Onli at www.onlistudios.com. They have other Black Age materials that you would be interested in; not just for our young boys, but also for our young sisters as well.
